Sentence Structure: Verb Placement

Hauptsätze: verb in second place

• ADUSO: aber, denn, und, sondern, oder
• Aber, denn, und, sondern, or oder is in position 0, and the verb is in position 2.
• IE: {subject} {verb} {other stuff}, ADUSO {subject} {verb} {other stuff}
• IE: Ich liebe dich, und du liebst mich.
• IE: Der Hund holt einen Ball, aber die Katze schläft auf dem Sofa.
 
• Prepositional Phrases: the prepositional phrase is in position 1, and the verb is in position 2.
• IE: {prepositional phrase} {verb} {subject} {other stuff}
• IE: Bei diesem Fest kommen viele Gäste von außerhalb der Stadt.
 
• Time Phrases: the time phrases is in position 1, and the verb is in position 2.
• IE: {time phrase} {verb} {subject} {other stuff}
• IE: Am Samstag fahre ich nach Berlin.
• Combining:
• Am Samstag fahre ich nach Berlin, aber am Sonntag schlafe ich aus.
 

Nebensätze: verb in second place

• Also: also is in position 1, and the verb is in position 2.

• Sie ist sehr krank, also möchte sie im Bett bleiben.
• Heute ist Samstag, also ist morgen Sonntag.
 
• Deshalb: deshalb is in position 1, and the verb is in position 2.

• Ich bin müde, deshalb möchte ich schlafen.
• Der Zug ist nicht gekommen, deshalb habe ich mich entschieden, mein Fahrrad zu benutzen.

• als: verb at the end
• Use als to describe an action that ocurred one time in the past
• IE: Als {subject} {other stuff} {verb}, {verb} {subject} {other stuff}
• IE: Als ich das erste Mal in Italien war, habe ich zu viele Pullover mitgenommen.
• IE: {subject} {verb} {other stuff}, als {subject} {other stuff} {verb}
• IE: Ich habe zu viele Pullover mitgenommen, als ich das erste Mal in Italien war.
 
• dass: verb at the end
• {Haupsatz}, dass {subject} {other stuff} {verb}
• {Haupsatz}, dass {subject} {other stuff} {infinitive verb} {conjugated verb}
 
• nachdem: verb at the end
• {Haupsatz}, nachdem {subject} {other stuff} {verb}
• Nachdem {subject} {other stuff} {verb}, {verb} {subject} {other stuff}
• (This "nachdem" phrase works like a time phrase.)
• Nachdem Hannah die Prüfung bestanden hat, beginnt sie das Studium.
 
• weil: verb at the end

• Use wenn to describe actions that occur regularly, ocurred regularly in the past
• IE: Wenn {subject} {other stuff} {verb}, {verb} {subject} {other stuff}.
• IE: Wenn ich in Italien bin, esse ich Eis.
• IE: {subject} {verb} {other stuff}, wenn {subject} {other stuff} {verb}.
• IE: Ich esse Eis, wenn ich in Italien bin.
 
• Use wenn to describe a action that is ocurring once in the present
• IE: Wenn ich heute Abend nach Hause komme, rufe ich meine Mutter.
• IE: Ich rufe meine Mutter, wenn ich heute Abend nach Hause komme.
